Export Music Sweden presents... The UK Music Market by francine gorman

Very pleased to be joining the fine folks of Export Music Sweden in Stockholm on the Friday 13th October (uh-oh...) to present a keynote on the UK music market, covering all of the topics that are keeping us entertained at the moment.

Also heading to Stockholm are the likes of Jon Hillcock (BBC 6 Music), Jason Reed (Domino Recording Co.) and Sam Lee (Songular), to chat about subjects from streaming, to radio, to royalties and more.

Find out more about the programme here, and come down to Nalen to say hello if you're in town!

Sørveiv Conference - Kristiansand, November 2017! by francine gorman

Very excited to share the news that i've joined the Sørveiv Conference team alongside the brilliant Andy Inglis and Daniel Nordgård!

Set to take place in Kristiansand, Norway in November, we're working hard to put together an innovative, insightful programme representing all voices within the industry - so read more about our mission and the great people that will be taking part right here...

"Conferences should be a catalyst for change and renewal, and an opportunity to raise the level of discourse in our industry, but too often revolve around the same topics, debated by the same voices. Sørveiv offers new perspectives in a conference landscape that’s become tired and formulaic. We gather the brightest minds from the global music community to meet, encourage and inform, inviting a younger, more diverse, gender-balanced and socially representative group of delegates to work through the issues and better arm our industry for the challenges that lie ahead."

Ja Ja Ja and the Nordic Playlist join forces! by francine gorman

It's here! After a long time in the making, the Ja Ja Ja and Nordic Playlist websites have joined forces!

We've integrated the brilliant archive of curated Nordic Playlists into the Ja Ja Ja site, to create one definitive destination to discover all of the amazing things that are happening in the Nordics right now. The result is a totally gorgeous (if we do say so ourselves...!) new site that we'll be continuing to expand and develop, all with the worthy ambition of spreading the good word of Nordic music as far and wide as possible.

The Ja Ja Ja club nights will return to London and Berlin in September, and in the meantime, i'd like to thank all of our contributors for helping to keep the Ja Ja Ja platform so lively and packed full of great content. Looking forward to continuing to work with you all!

So please take a look, and if you like it, and you feel so inclined, help us to spread the word by sharing the site with your social pals and acquaintances! And if you have any editorial requests, please get in touch : Francine Gorman, Ja Ja Ja Editor - hello@jajajamusic.com

Hits & Bits - A playlist for your perusal... by francine gorman

Alongside the other playlists that I work on, I've decided to create this little gem!

'Hits & Bits' is a lazily titled sonic glimpse into whatever i'm listening to at any one time. I try to update it each week with new things that have grabbed my attention, and most weeks, it'll have Thee Oh Sees in it. This week it has two of their tracks - a starter and a finisher, both from the Live In San Francisco record which is just. brilliant.

There's also a recent track from Peckham based artist Mellah, and a dreamy new number from up and coming Norwegian musician Jakob Ogawa, among others. So please have a listen! I hope you enjoy, and if you feel so inclined, please give the playlist a little follow and I promise to update it with great things, all the time.

Production Project: Episode 5 - Beats 1 Show, hosted by Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson by francine gorman

The final episode of the by:Larm Takeover series airs today at 2pm (UK time)! It's hosted by Black Metal legend and top notch dude Ivar Bjørnson, known as the leader of the hugely successful Enslaved, as well as for his work with Einar Selvik of Wardruna!

He gives us a brilliant insight into the thriving Black Metal scene of not just Norway, but of the Nordics as a whole - so tune in at 2pm to hear it, or Apple Music subscribers can hear it whenever they like via this link.

This has been a fantastic project to work on, so huge thanks to Aurora, Sigrid, Ina Wroldsen, Seeb and Ivar Bjørnson for their phenomenal efforts, and big thanks to Music Norway and by:Larm for bringing me into the project <3

Efterklang - Performance Text for London's Barbican Centre by francine gorman

It's always great to be able to write about a band that you love, but it's even better when that band are doing something completely fresh and new - as was the story when Efterklang brought their opera to the Barbican Centre in London recently.

Having teamed up with composer Karsten Fundal to compose the music for Leaves: The Colour Of Falling in 2015, Efterklang revived the project to take it on the road this year - and I had the pleasure of putting together the accompanying text for their Barbican performance, which you can read below - and check out some of the music from the opera in my Hits & Bits playlist!

Production Project: Songwriter Ina Wroldsen hosts the latest by:Larm Takeover show on Beats 1 by francine gorman

The third episode in the by:Larm takeover of Beats 1 is ready to go, presented by incredible pop hit maker Ina Wroldsen! You might recognise Ina as the writer and vocalist on Calvin Harris's 'How Deep Is Your Love', as well as being the writer behind 'Impossible' for James Arthur, 'DNA' for Little Mix, and tracks for Britney Spears, One Direction, Shakira and many more.

The episode will be available for all to hear via the (free to access) Beats 1 live stream at the following times:

Thursday 16th March @ 6PM LA / 9PM NY / 2AM LDN
Friday 17th March @ 6AM LA / 9AM NY / 2PM LDN

(Available On Demand for Apple Music users after these dates)

As previously mentioned, I've been producing this radio series on behalf of by:Larm and Music Norway, creating five episodes to mark the 20th anniversary of Norway's by:Larm Festival.

This has been a really great project to be a part of, especially making this show, which was recorded on a very snowy day at White Room studios in Asker, Norway. It was a great recording session, and i'm particularly grateful to Ina for talking so candidly throughout this programme, and for giving such a great insight into the struggles that songwriters can face as well as the successes they can gain if the they persevere.

Hope you enjoy!
